Nevertheless, it gestures toward the work that would follow, with the repeated patterns on the central bird's plumage and the relationship of the smaller birds to the large one, each fitting into the negative space that the central bird creates. Instead, this is a fairly straightforward depiction of several birds in flight. A tessellation is a collection of shapes called tiles that fit together without gaps or overlaps to cover the mathematical plane. Pattern for a Hooked Rug, Tessellating Fish, my original design. Birds is a rather different piece it is not actually a tessellation, nor does it contain any impossible spaces or surreal use of gravity. His most famous works are Drawing Hands (1948), depictions of impossible architecture like Relativity (1953), and tessellations of birds and fish like Sky and Water I (1938). Although his work has largely been relegated to pop-culture cliche and math classes, Escher demonstrated a sophisticated understanding of the brain, visual stimuli, spatial relations, the role of images in culture, and both modernism and postmodernism. This next one is also of birds and fish, which I think is Escher’s –Īnd finally this marvellous Escher 1940-wood-design: Fish Theme tessellation which I think is brilliant, beautiful.Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was an influential Dutch graphic artist, whose explorations of complex and impossible spaces and tessellations have become indelible fixtures of contemporary culture. Here is a whimsical drawing of a fish leaping out of a fish bowl to draw. This one is pictured in an Escher bio page I visited, and is shown as a bas relief panel applied to a building with the caption “…Escher-like mural…” but considering where it is, I’m taking it as at least based on one of his designs. Brick walls, tiled floors, and the honeycomb in bee hives are all tessellations. These fill a surface, usually a 2D plane, without gaps or overlaps. I didn’t go into them – but good to know they’re there if I develop a yen to design something that way. Tessellations here mean symmetric designs featuring animals, toasters, persons, etc, which can fit together in repetitive patterns like simple jigsaw puzzles. There are lots of videos but this first very short one is inspiring and is followed by several tutorials on how to make a tessellation. However, just let your eyes wander over the page, and especially enjoy the images I selected to show today. Tessellations are fascinating, and the lines of fish in motion provide plenty of opportunity for tessellating a shape or two by a graphic designer, the master of them of course being the dutch designer (Maurits Cornelis) MC Escher , and there are heaps of marvellous tessellations here, though it is hard to tell if all of them are his – the page seems diluted by other people’s work as you scroll down – typical.
